National Merit Scholarship Scheme for College and University Students

The national merit scholarship scheme was first introduced by the department of education in the year 1961-1962 it was available for the poor but brilliant students from class 11th (Xl) to post-graduation level.

In addition, a scholarship scheme at the Secondary stage was also introduced by the department of education in the year 1971-1972.

It was only available to poor but talented students from rural areas from class 6th to class 12th. These 2 Schemes were merged and made a single Scheme with the name of ‘National Merit Scholarship Scheme’.

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to poor students from economically weak families to pursue higher studies. The scholarships will be given based on the marks and the results of the senior secondary exam.

Nearly 82,000 (Eighty Two Thousand) fresh scholarships per annum in which 41000 (Forty-One Thousand) for boys and 41000 (Forty-One Thousand) for girls will be awarded for graduate or postgraduate studies in colleges/universities.

The total no. of scholarships will be divided based on the population in the age group of 18 years to 25 years and 50% of the scholarships would be reserved for girls.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Students who belong to the non-creamy layer and whose parental annual income should not be more than Rs. 4.50000/-.
  2. Individuals who are pursuing regular courses from any recognized college or institute (not correspondence or distance education).
  3. Students who are not availing of any other scholarship from any other source.
  4. Students will be eligible for the scholarship scheme for a total duration of 5 years.
  5. The scholarship amount will be paid for 10 months in each academic year.
  6. Students shall present the Entitlement Card Format, Income Affidavit Format, Students Statement of Particulars Format, and Joining Report Format duly filled into the Principle of the college (Download the format from the below link).

Scholarship Amount:

  • Rs.1000/- Per Month at Graduation Level
  • 2000/- Per Month at Post Graduation Level
  • 2000/- Per Month for Professional Courses

Renewal Process: 

The scholarship is renewable from year to year up to Post Graduate level. For all courses, the scholarship will be renewed maximum of 5 years.

The renewal process will depend on the scholars who secure 60% marks and who promote to the next class.

Students must be regular in attendance with a minimum of 75%. If a student violates any rules and regulations the scholarship may be canceled by the competent authority.

Payment of Scholarship:

The amount will be transferred directly to the Bank Account of the scholarship holder through NEFT. The scholarship amount will be paid for 10 months in each academic year.
