Tatkaal Passport Process, Time, Fees, Verification & Renewal

A passport is not just an official license to travel abroad easily, it is considered to be more than that. It is an official identification proof, authentic proof, and then address proof provided by the Government of India.

The passport allows you to travel anywhere across the world without any inconvenience. The Ministry of External Affairs, Passport, and Visa consular are responsible for making the application process easy as well as providing passports to the citizens of this country.

There are two modes of application when it comes to availing of the passport. These application modes are based on the requirements and urgency of an individual.

The two application modes of a passport are:

Normal Application: The normal passport application process does not have any time limit or specific requirements.
Tatkaal Application: The tatkal passport application is an urgent process that requires an additional fee to process the application.

Tatkal Passport Eligibility:

There are certain categories or situations that make an individual eligible to apply for a tatkal passport.

The applicant who cannot apply under the Tatkaal Scheme are:

  • Individuals who have undergone a significant Name Change.
  • The citizens are born to Indian parents (of Indian descent) outside India.
  • Citizens originating from Nagaland but residing outside Nagaland.
  • Residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Nagaland.
  • Minors residing within Nagaland.
  • Additionally, Short passport validity renewal.
  • Children adopted by Indian and Foreign parents.
  • Similarly, Lost or stolen passports.
  • Minor children with single parents.
  • Individuals deported to India from other countries.
  • Indian citizens who were granted citizenship status based on registrations etc.
  • Any changes in personal credentials like signature etc.
  • In the case of damaged passports.
  • Valid changes in the applicant’s appearance or gender.
  • Applicants who have been repatriated from another country at the Government’s cost.

To process the application for a tatkal, then there are specific documents that are necessarily required.

Tatkaal Passport

Police Verification Process:

Depending on whether an application is for the issue of a fresh or renewal of a passport, Passport Office shall decide whether Police Verification is required for the issuance of a Passport to you.

In most cases of issue of fresh passport, pre-police verification would be required, the exception being Government servants on submission of ‘Identity Certificate’, or minors whose parents hold a valid passport, etc.

Tatkaal Police Verification is required on a Pre-Passport Issuance basis. Expected to be dispatched within 3 working days of receipt of a “Recommendatory” Police Verification Report (PVR) from the Police Department. This does not include the date of receipt of the “Recommendatory” PVR.
Police Verification is not required. Expected to be dispatched within 1 working day excluding the date of submission of the application.
Police Verification is required on a Post-Passport Issuance basis. Expected to be dispatched on the 3rd working day excluding the date of submission of the application – without waiting for the Police Verification Report.

Time Period:

The application process for a tatkal passport may take up to 1 to 3 days.

How to Apply for Tatkaal Passport Application?

  • Register & Login into the Indian Passport official website.
  • Choose “Fresh or Re-issue Passport”. select ‘Fresh passport’
  •  Then select the ‘Tatkaal’ scheme.
  • Fill out the application and submit it online.
  • Pay the fees online using Debit/Credit/ Net Banking.
  • Once you complete the payment process, take a printout of the receipt.
  • Schedule an appointment at your nearest Passport Service Kendra.

Renewal Application:

When you apply for a tatkal renewal application, there is quick verification compared to the normal verification.

The processing takes less time and your passport is supposed to be dispatched within 1-3 days after the application.

The application and the documents are verified easily, in case police verification is required, and you will get the passport by the 3rd or 4th day.

The standard fee for applying for a tatkal passport is more or less than Rs.3000 with an additional fee for a police clearance certificate.
