Heritage Jail Museum Sangareddy, Medak

To spend a night in prison, you don’t have to commit a serious offense?

A 222-year-old prison in Sangareddy district, Telangana, offers an intriguing experience called “Feel The Jail’ in which anyone can pay INR 500 to spend a night inside a cell.

Heritage Jail Museum

What Makes this Jail So Amazing?

During the Nizam era, the heritage jail building was constructed in 1796, almost over 200 years ago. It is a full heritage museum with exhibits that can be explored, which makes it truly stunning.

When Sangareddy Jail opened in 2016 for this initiative, it attracted a large number of history lovers and curious people. And we’re not just talking about Indians here; the jail has some overseas visitors (including foreign nationals from Malaysia).

The prison’s corridors are filled with a few paintings depicting crimes and penalties that were common in India, Europe, the Mughal era, and those that are covered by the Indian Penal Code.

Additionally, there is a little store on the premises where you can purchase the products created by the prisoners. The male barracks houses the museum, while the female barracks are built up to simulate a jail.

What do you get inside the Jail Museum?

When you’ve finally decided to try to Feel The Jail, you’ll be given a prisoner’s clothing, as well as necessities like a steel plate, steel glass. And You’re restricted from the rest of the world for the next 24 hours.

The 24-hour routine includes getting up at 6 a.m., marching, and experiencing “jail ka khana.” Thankfully, tea is provided, but that is the extent of your enjoyment.

You’ll be served the same meals as the prisoners, including upma, roti, dal, rice, rasam, and more.
Even if you aren’t asked, you are welcome to do some gardening and cleaning in the courtyard before returning to your cell after dinner.

You can check out the next morning, but if you want to leave the experience in the middle, you’ll have to pay a fine of INR 1,000. But we’re confident that those who join up will make the most of it. It is, after all, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Why was this initiative started?

It isn’t as scary as it seems since we’ve heard that when people are locked up, they realize the value of freedom. The intention is to raise awareness of how it feels to be in jail, cut off from the rest of the world, how it feels to be unable to do everything you want, and to understand how difficult it is to survive in jail. In addition, the official hopes that it will help in the reduction of crime.
