List of All States & Union Territories in India (Population, Capital)

India is a federal republic where the power is vested in the Central government. The states and their governments function in most respects like counties and municipalities in other countries of the world.

However, there are some significant differences between the state systems of other countries and that of India. This article highlights some key features of the Indian state system so that you can understand it better.

The states in India function with a defined set of powers and functions, which vary from one state to another according to their size, population, economic strength, geographic conditions, etc. Most states have been carved out from former princely states or large districts and union territories.

There are also smaller regions that are not considered separate entities but combine to form a single state such as Lakshadweep Islands or Mizoram or Goa which enjoy special status as Union Territories under Article 371 of the Constitution of India.
