The University of Madras has been re-accredited at the “A” Grade Level by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) and conferred with the “University with Potential for Excellence” status by UGC. 7 private colleges were affiliated with Madras University from 1858 to 1871. During this academic year, Madras University has one hundred and fifteen affiliated colleges like ninety-five arts and science, thirteen management, six education, and one physical education.

The open university system requires the completion of eighteen years of age and should pass an entrance examination.
17 UG programs and 10 PG programs are being conducted under the open university and credit system; 15 UG programs are being offered in Tamil and English language and various diploma and certificate courses are also provided under both streams.
Madras University was launching special professional integrated courses in B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce), M.Com (Masters of Commerce), Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) for students.
The University has also agreed to carry out research, leading to M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees. They have also decided to organize various joint seminars relevant to Commerce and Management and other related subjects.
