About University:

Ravenshaw University began as Cuttack College in 1841. After the Great Famine of 1866, the then British rulers turned their attention toward the education of the people of Odisha and two years later, in 1868, intermediate classes were started.

Through the efforts of the then commissioner of Odisha T.E. Ravenshaw, Cuttack College was raised to the status of a first-grade college in 1876. The college was originally affiliated to Calcutta University.

Upon the separation of Bihar and Odisha from Bengal in 1912, the affiliation of the college was transferred to Patna University in 1917. The College was finally affiliated to Utkal University in 1943.

Clichéd though it is, it needs to be said that the history of Ravenshaw is synonymous with the history of Modern Odisha. The college hall, now known as the Heritage Hall, was a theatre of history: on 1 April 1936.

It was the venue for the declaration of Odisha as a separate province; thereafter it housed the state’s first legislative assembly up to and after Independence till it was shifted to Bhubaneswar, the capital of the state.

During the Quit India movement of 1942 the students of this institution brought down the Union Jack as a mark of nationalistic fervor. Utkal University began functioning from this campus till it was shifted to its present site at VaniVihar, Bhubaneswar.

This institution is the alma mater of the most distinguished personalities of the state. Not only the Utkal University but also the Odisha State Museum and Madhusudan Law College are the offshoots of this institution, obtaining their independent status at a later stage.

Ravenshaw University though a young University, is the proud inheritor of the grand legacy of the erstwhile Ravenshaw College, one of the oldest seats of learning in the country. To promote among the students and teachers an awareness and understanding of the social needs of the country and prepare them for fulfilling such need.

The department makes provision for integrated courses in humanities, education, management, science and technology in the educational programs of the University.

University also takes appropriate measures for promoting inter-disciplinary studies in the University. Establish such departments or schools in the University as may be necessary for the study of languages, literature and life of foreign countries with a view to inculcating in students a world perspective and international understanding.
