Pondicherry University is founded in 1985 by Govt of India, it is central university in puducherry, the university is a collegiate university with a jurisdiction spread over the Union Territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

Pondicherry University is ranked as one of the top ten universities in India based on survey conducted in 2013. PU introduced innovations like choice based credit system and online admission for PG studies. PU has nearly 35,000 students in it’s around 87 affiliated colleges including 27, 000 students in the distance education mode. The current strength of students studying on campus stands at 6,500.

This university became one of the India’s fastest growing central university with above 300% all round growth in all Students, faculties, infrastructure, teaching program, and research project. Teaching programs and research are the primary functions as in other Central Universities.
