The N-PDF scheme is aimed to identify and encourage motivated researchers and support them with financial aid to conduct research works in the frontier areas of engineering and science.

The young researchers will work under a mentor and receive mentorship and training that will help them get on a platform to develop themselves as an independent researcher.

The fellowship will start from the date on which the fellow joins the University/Institute where he/she implements the fellowship. The mentor will send the joining report to the SERB. SERB will release the funds on receipts of the joining report.

The applicant is selected for the SERB fellowship, will be governed by the rules and regulations of the University/ Institute, and will be under the administrative control of the University/Institute for the duration of the fellowship.

The grant-in-aid by the Science & Engineering Research Board will be used to meet the expenditure on the project and for a period for which the project has been sanctioned as indicated in the sanction letter/order.

No administrative or other liability will be attached to the SERB at the end of the fellowship. The university/institute will provide basic infrastructure and other required facilities to the fellow for undertaking the research objectives.

The university/institute will take into its books all assets received under this sanction and its disposal will be at the discretion of SERB. Selected fellows shall abide by the rules, discipline, and regulations of SERB during the fellowship period.

The university/institute assumes to undertake the financial and other management responsibilities of the project. The university/institute shall settle financial accounts to the SERB as per the prescribed guidelines within 03 months from the date of termination of the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria for NPDF:

  • To stand a chance for applying under this scheme, it is mandatory that the applicant be an Indian national.
  • The applicant must have a complete Ph.D. / M.S. /M.D and obtained a degree from an affiliated university. The candidates who have completed their thesis of Ph.D. /M.S. / M.D and are still waiting for their degree are also eligible to apply, but they will receive a lesser amount till the time they get their degree.
  • This fellowship mainly caters to providing financial support to young researchers, so the upper age limit under this scheme is only 35 years during the application submission. The candidate’s age will be calculated at the time of application. A relaxation of 5 years will be granted to applicants who belong to the ST/SC/OBC category. A relaxation of 5 years will be given to women and physically challenged candidates as well.
  • The financial aid under this fellowship program can be availed only once in the candidate’s career.
  • The mentors shall hold a regular academic or research position in an affiliated Indian Institute and they must be Ph.D. degree holders in the Engineering or Science field.

Duration of Fellowship:

  • The fellowship will be provided only to the students pursuing research work in India and it can be implemented for any recognized research institution, academic institutions, affiliated R&D institutions, and national laboratories.
  • The host institution shall have the necessary infrastructural support and administrative.
  • The fellowship will be provided for a period of two years, and it is clearly a temporary assignment.
  • The applicant can’t avail it under working with the Ph.D. Guide or co-guide, ad in the institutions where they have earned their Ph.D. / M.S. /M.D degree.
  • The grant provided can be used for domestic travel, consumables, contingencies, and minor equipment.
  • The candidates selected under this fellowship are not eligible to receive any other grant during the fellowship tenure, whether it is from a government or non-government organization.

FellowshipAn amount of 55,000/- per month will be granted to candidates who have obtained their Ph.D. / M.S. /M.D degrees.

An amount of 35,000/- per month will be granted to applicants who haven’t received their degree but have submitted their thesis.

Research GrantA research grant of 2 lakhs per annum will be awarded to selected candidates.
OverheadsRs. 1 lakh per annum.

How to Apply for National Post-Doctoral Fellowship?

  • All applicants will be required to register themselves by visiting the website SERB portal.
  • They are then required to fill in all details in the profile section, including their biodata, institute address, photo, mentor details, etc.
  • Details related to project work shall be provided online during the time of submission of the application. It should include the project title, summary, objectives, and expected outcome of the proposal.
  •  The research methodology and work plan shall also be uploaded in PDF format.

Mode of Application and Selection:

• The applications are invited twice a year and official notification is released on www.serbonline.in.

• A duly filled application form attached to the research proposal needs to be submitted online through the website. The Research proposal shall highlight the research objectives and work that will be undertaken.

• It is mandatory for the applicants to identify a suitable mentor under whom they will get mentorship to conduct the research work they aim to carry out.

• The candidates will be selected based on the Expert committee’s recommendation and interview of short-listed candidates.

SERB reserves the right to terminate the rules and fellowship award at any stage when it is realized that the expected progress has not been made by the researcher or is convinced that the granted amount has not been properly utilized.
