Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) for Minority Students

The aim of the Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) Scheme is to offer 5-year fellowships in the form of financial support to minority community students to continue higher education such as MPhil and Ph.D.

The national fellowship will cover all the Universities recognized by UGC and implemented by the Government of India, Ministry of Minority Affairs through the University Grants Commission for students belonging to the minority community.

The fellowship is awarded only to research students studying M.Phil and Ph.D. courses regularly and full-time. The students under this scheme are also known as the Ministry of Minority Affairs scholars. Three percent of fellowships are reserved for PH (Physically Handicapped) candidates who belong to the minority community as per regulations of the Govt. of India.

The MANF for minority students is formulated & funded by the MMA (Ministry of Minority Affairs). This scheme is open to students who belong to Minority Communities such as Muslims, Sikhs, Farsi, Buddhists, Christians & Jain, and who pursuing higher education such as full-time MPhil / Ph.D. degrees in sciences, humanities, social sciences, and engineering & technology.

The students who belong to the minority community and who have passed the exam of post-graduation with at least 50% marks in a relevant subject and the students who are pursuing their full-time research without Junior Research Fellow of UGC NET or UGC CSIR NET.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Students must belong to minority communities (Muslims, Sikhs, Farsi, Buddhists, Christians, and Jain.
  • Students must submit a certificate of the minority community and a valid affidavit.
  • Students must be regular and full-time MPhil / Ph.D. courses in any India University/institute.
  • The parental annual income of the student should not be more than (Two Lakh and Fifty Thousand Rupees) Rs.2.5 lakhs.
  • Students must submit the income certificate issued by the Patent Authority.
  • Students must secure 50% at the PG level.
  • Transgender students may also apply and the reservation applied as per the Indian Government norms.

Fellowship Amount:

Fellowship Amount
  • Rs.25,000/- for starting 2 years for JRF
  • Rs.28,000/- for the remaining period for SRF
Contingency for Humanities and Social Sciences and Commerce
  • Rs.10,000/- per annum for starting 2 years.
  • Rs.20,500/- per annum for the remaining 3 years.
Contingency for Science
  • Rs.12,000/- per annum for starting 2 years
  • Rs.25,000/- per annum for the remaining 3 years.
Escorts / Reader Assistance
  • Rs.2,000/- per month in case of physically challenged and visually challenged students

MANF Fellowships Distribution:

  1. The total no. of state-wise distribution of fellowships every year will be 756.
  2. Thirty% of scholarships shall be reserved for women candidates and the remaining seventy% goes to general candidates. If there are not 30% of women students, then fellowships shall be passed to the male candidates of the same community.
  3. If the number of students is exceeded, then students will be selected on the basis of the marks obtained in the PG examination.
  4. Un-utilized fellowship of any minority community in a State / Union Territory will be transferred to the eligible students of the same minority community purely on the basis of merit.
  5. If the number of fellowships allocated to a particular State / Union Territory is not fully utilized for the reason of the non-availability of eligible students, the slots shall be reallocated among other States / Union Territories.
  6. The eligible candidates of the minority community shall not avail of any other fellowship benefits from any source.
  7. Fellowship can’t be transferred from one community to another.
  8.  Not more than 2 students from single-family are eligible for this fellowship.

MANF Facilities:

Hostel Allowance: A single-seated hostel accommodation can be provided to the students in the institute.

Medical Benefits: No separate or fixed medical assistance will be provided. But the candidate can avail of the medical facilities of Colleges or Institutes.

Leave: Maximum 30 days leave in a single year excluding public holidays taken by the fellow. In the case of maternity or paternity students are eligible for full rates of scholarship as per Indian Government norms.

Joining: The students must join the fellowship within a period of three months from the issuing date of the award letter if the candidates fail to join then the authority may cancel the fellowship.

Amount Releasing: The amount of fellowship will be disbursed through the University Grants Commission designated agency into the fellow bank account.

How to Apply for Fellowship for MANF Online?

Eligible candidates can apply for the Maulana Azad National Fellowship online through the NSP website. Paper advertisement will be given in a newspaper and a short notification on the University Grants Commission’s official website www.ugc.ac.in.
